Biography:
Academician Mirna Šitum was born in 1962 in Cista Provo, Croatia. She earned her medical degree from the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Medicine in 1985. Following graduation, she began her clinical career at the Emergency Medical Service in Split, where she worked until 1991. During the Croatian Homeland War (1991–1993), she served voluntarily as an active-duty officer in the Croatian Army’s Fourth Guards Brigade.
Dr. Šitum has specialized in dermatology and venereology since 1996, with a subspecialization in dermatologic oncology obtained in 2004. Since 1999, she has led the Department of Dermatovenerology at the School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb, and since 2000, she has headed the Department of Dermatovenereology at the Sestre Milosrdnice University Hospital Centre.
She plays a key educational role across multiple institutions, directing and teaching in postgraduate and doctoral programs at the School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, and Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry at the University of Zagreb. Additionally, she is a visiting professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Osijek and Mostar, contributing significantly to the development of medical education in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Prof. Šitum held the presidency of the Croatian Dermatovenereological Society under the Croatian Medical Association (CMA) from 2009 to 2018. Since 2019, she has presided over both the Croatian Society for Dermatologic Oncology (CMA) and the Central South Eastern European Melanoma Expert Group (CSEEMEG), affiliated with the European Melanoma Registry (EuMelaReg).
A prolific contributor to her field, she has organized over 100 professional and academic conferences, and has presented at more than 240 national and international scientific events. Her publication record includes 891 works—239 of them scientific articles, with 134 featured in Web of Science journals. She has edited 36 books and contributed 105 chapters across 37 edited volumes.
Her research involvement spans 17 scientific projects, and she serves on the editorial boards of nine scholarly journals. She holds membership in 10 international professional societies, including Euromelanoma and the Vitiligo Research Foundation, and sits on the Board of Directors of the European Association of Dermato-Oncology.
Prof. Šitum is the founder and current head of three Reference Centers recognized by the Croatian Ministry of Health: for Melanoma, for Dermoscopy, and for Chronic Wounds. She also leads the national Vitiligo Biobank. As an educator, she has mentored 24 doctoral candidates and heads the dermatovenereology specialization program at the national level. She chairs the Committee for Dermatovenereology at the Ministry of Health.
Her service and academic contributions have been widely recognized. She has received several honors for her role in the Homeland War, as well as multiple awards from the Croatian Medical Association, the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and the State Science Award.
Recognized as one of Croatia’s foremost dermato-oncologists, she is particularly distinguished in dermatologic oncology and psychodermatology, ranking as the country's most prolific and cited researcher in these fields. In 2018, she was elected as a full member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
